Model Winnie Harlow’s career has been filled with hallmarks as she continues to break down barriers in the modelling industry and redefining beauty as she makes waves throughout the modelling and fashion. The Canadian model, who made history as the first Canadian with Vitiligo to walk the runway for Victoria’s Secret, alongside Mecca based model Shahad Salman cover the latest issue of Vogue Arabia.
The duo, both living with vitiligo – a condition caused by a lack of melanin, make an important statement on representation especially in the fashion and beauty industry, a statement that would simultaneously make waves as well as push more fashion and beauty publications to be more diverse.
Prior to covering this issue of Vogue Arabia, Shahad Salman had very little experience with modelling and the fashion industry in general but she understood the importance of a black woman like her covering a publication like Vogue Arabia and what it would mean to girls like her out there.
I feel that now I can also inspire other girls from the region. Before, I didn’t feel good about myself and I didn’t like the way I looked. Winnie was the person who gave me the confidence to fight. I never expected to meet her. Sharing time on the set of Vogue with her was a dream. I feel that now I, too, can inspire other girls from Arab world.
Shahad Salman said about covering Vogue Arabia.
Other than the stunning duo covering this Vogue Arabia June Issue, inside the magazine are features on amazing Arabian women who are shattering and disrupting the norms and stereotypical expectations of the Arabian woman.
