New designers pop up everyday and quite a few of them are undoubtedly talented. We’ve had our eyes on quite a few up and coming brands and we will be highlighting some of the major on-the rise- brands you need to know in the series.
I gradually understood that fashion for me was about storytelling, people and documenting the subcultures as they unfolded around us.
BNS: Why did you start your line ?
I started the line discreetly in 2008 and officially in 2012. I knew very young that I had something to say in fashion but for a long time I wasn’t sure of the angle and style that defined my aesthetic. Being 20 in Dakar helped me through the exploration of its art scene. Through its movement, energy and rapid transformation, I gradually understood that fashion for me was about storytelling, people and documenting the subcultures as they unfolded around us.
BNS: Who is your favourite celebrity or influencer to work with?
Keziah Jones is on my wishlist currently, his complex universe, recent work on comics is over stimulating I hope our creative paths will soon cross.
BNS: How would you describe your label?
Our label is a post of observation of the urban Dakar and links the preoccupations of our environment to macro preoccupations of the urban life in the world. The label is attached to patrimony, to dream and fantasy. It seeks to create an harmonious space where the garment becomes a document, a piece of information and an element of strange beauty.

BNS: What do you believe should be the foundation of every woman’s wardrobe?
I think the most important thing is to look within then manifest that core identity through the garment.
Garments are subtle expressions of our views on the world and the way we intend to interact
with it. From that, the creation of a personal style begins.
BNS: Who is the Selly Raby Kane woman?
The woman is a freethinker, inspired by stories, arts and culture, she is independent and dresses in alignment with her core beliefs. She is the type of woman who would feel home in Abidjan, Tokyo or Dakar.
Strong, passionate, human and curious she craves for new experiences, encounters and makes it as important as professional fulfillment.
BNS: Where do you get style inspiration?
I wander in the streets of Dakar or explore urban settings around the world when I travel. I also visit artist studios in Dakar, a conversation always starts then triggers a piece, a project or a collaboration.
Music and reading is also a big part of my creative process. Gradually I created this ritual of creative stimulation, I think it became my favourite part of the whole process. The moment of void when you are about to create a collection and when everything is possible. Exquisite sensation !
